Selected REI Healthcare Ethics and Economics Projects
REI principles have experience in the ethical fundamentals of healthcare and the measurement of the economic values of various health conditions.
Advance Care Planning
Most people go to the hospital for treatable illness or surgery, get well and go home. The goal is to aid your recovery, keep you as free from pain as possible, and make you comfortable in the process.
However, if you become seriously injured or gravely ill, you may be asked to make difficult decisions about your medical care. Advance Care Planning helps you, your Physician(s) and your family with medical decision-making in a more thoughtful, less hurried and less stressful environment.

Medical Ethical Issues and Decision-making Guide
Most of the time, you, your physician(s) and family are in agreement regarding your medical plan of care. However this is not always the case. Medical Ethics asks questions about what we “ought” to do in very difficult and conflicted situations. Medical Ethical dilemmas arise when there are disagreements in treatment decisions between physician, and patient and/or surrogate decision maker. Ethical issues can arise when there has been no Advance Care Planning and your wishes are unknown.

Plotting your life journey according to health care
Adults tend to think little about their health care until it is time for their yearly medical check-up or until they have some illness requiring medical care. As long as one’s level of daily activity remains unchanged and there are no physical complaints of pain and no evidence of disease, it is business as usual. Health can change slowly or very abruptly. The Karnofsky Performance Scale is a tool used widely among medical professionals to help assess the risks and outcome of diseases. The following document is a guide to aid you in Advance Care Planning. It can be used by you as a talking point with your physician and family.
