Center for the Commercialization of Electric Technologies
Dr. Holloway’s commentary on the transition of the electric grid
“The electric grid in Texas and elsewhere across the U.S. and the developed world is undergoing a technology transition. This developing modern grid joins IT technology with the traditional engineering approach for management of the flow of electrons. The transition from a one-way system of electron flow -- from central station generation to the consumer-- is giving way to a new system of two-way information communication and flexible generation at several places on the grid. This modern grid includes, among other things, renewable generation by the end-use customer, and the active participation of industrial, commercial and residential consumers in managing their load. The promise is that such diverse generation and load management will benefit both the consumer and the grid manager while supporting the transition to a more efficient grid. But this vision of a modern grid has many challenges that are the focus of experts around the world.
While there is much yet to be completed in this transition, much has been accomplished. Texas, in many ways has led the nation in this electric grid transition that is taking place in a Texas-style deregulated market. The Center for the Commercialization of Electric Technologies (CCET) played a significant role in these achievements during the last decade. I led this Texas non-profit organization as it carried out several important technology demonstration projects during 2005-2015. At its peak CCET included 22 utility and technology companies.
The link below will take you to the CCET Webpage as it existed in 2015. There you will find information about the formation, governance, and organizational meetings, as well as completed technology projects. I am pleased to have had a significant role in those accomplishments.”
